An algorithm is simply a set of instructions for solving a problem. Recipes, formulas, and sorting methods are all algorithms.
Machine learning is a subset of AI that allows systems to improve performance by learning from data rather than following fixed rules. Instead of being told exactly what to do, the system adapts based on examples.
Artificial Intelligence is the broader concept. It includes machine learning but also rule-based systems, optimization models, and other approaches designed to simulate intelligent behavior.
Understanding these distinctions helps cut through marketing language. Not everything labeled “AI” is intelligent, and not all algorithms are learning systems. Clear definitions lead to clearer thinking—and better decisions.
